Why Is My Second Floor So Hot?

There’s one question we get all the time, from back in 2005 when we first started. People ask us, “Why is my second floor so hot? What gives? Is it my air conditioner? Is it a bad house?” People tell us their kids don’t want to sleep upstairs because it’s too hot. Or they don’t want to play up there, have friends, or use the media room up there because it’s uncomfortable.

The Main Issues

This is a widespread problem! There are a couple of reasons why this happens, and it’s not because you have a wrong house or an old house—even new houses have this problem.

Hot air rises, and heat rises to the upstairs level. But this is attic insulation or attic heat issue. Most of the time, a second story can be built into an attic, or it has a second story surrounded by an attic, which leads to exterior hot walls or walls backing up to a 140-degree attic. Sometimes the run from the A/C unit into the rooms is long, and it’s going through a 140-160 degree attic right over your second floor.

In other words, the reason your second story is hot is a little bit of everything in the engineering and design of your home.

How We Can Solve This Problem

The good news is, these are all issues we can solve! Nine times out of 10, or 99 times out of 100, we can come in and reduce your attic temperature, insulate those hot walls better, ventilate the attic, and immediately start delivering cooler air from your A/C unit to that second story. And the good news there is that cool air falls! So once we get cooler air going to the second story of your home, that will affect your first story as well!

So don’t worry. You’re normal if you have a second story that’s hotter than the first. It’s a widespread problem. But it’s not okay, and you don’t have to live with it!
