How Does Attic Insulation Work?

We’ve talked a lot about the radiant barrier lately and what it does. Today let’s talk about insulation.

The Purpose of Attic Insulation

The concept of insulation is to help your household temperature longer. Your refrigerator is insulated to help it stay cool. Your oven is insulated to help it stay hot.

Insulation can be anything that will help you hold temperature by reducing the escape of heated and cooled air.

What To Look For In Your Attic

By doing a simple attic inspection, you’ll be able to see what your average insulation levels may be. Most homes have extremely inconsistent insulation levels: in some places, you’ll see mounds of insulation, and in some places, you may see the framing of your ceiling joists.

Often those ceiling joists are about 6 inches tall, so in the areas where your insulation is not covering the rafters, you might have less than 6 inches of insulation there!
